SERVICES OFFERED BY FOCUS
PSYCHOTHERAPY
INDIVIDUAL
THERAPY
At Focus Psychotherapy
Associates, Individual Therapy focuses on problems that interfere with daily living. Depression, Anxiety, Life
Transitions and Eating Disorders are just a few of the reasons why an individual may come for treatment. In
individual treatment, we utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Psychodynamic Therapy, or a combination of both, to
help individuals focus on the thinking and feelings that infringe upon the quality of their lives. We utilize
methods for behavior change and stay focused on improving the present, so one can move into the future feeling
healthy and confident.
The course
of treatment is typically focused and short-term (approximately 10-20 sessions), and people often enjoy rapid
and enduring relief from their symptoms. As one begins to feel better, they may choose to continue to work with
us to achieve greater personal growth, or to continue to work on gaining self-knowledge, improving
self-esteem, and learning relapse prevention. Successful treatment involves a therapeutic relationship that is
interactive and can help the individual find ways to feel and
function better. In individual therapy we will meet in fifty-minute sessions. Your first session will
include an assessment to define your treatment needs and goals and determine how we can best assist you to
attain them.
ADOLESCENTS and TEENAGERS
Adolescence is a time of change and
transition. Our treatment philosophy takes into account how biology, psychology and the environment interplay in
the formation of problems as one matures and prepares for adulthood. We specialize in helping teenagers with depression, various
forms of anxiety, and eating disorders by viewing what maintains the problems is the inability to relate
feelings to behaviors. While adults tend to benefit from talk therapy, many teenagers have greater initial
success with behavior modification and learning concrete methods to improve self-esteem.Teaching life skills
such as problem solving, decision making, social skills and communication may form the basis of initial
treatment planning. Goals of therapy include helping a teenager resolve problems in the family, at school, with
peers, and with his/her changing roles in relationships and in society.
The course
of treatment is focused and usually short-term. With some emotional and behavioral problems, family work may be
recommended. By improving communication between family members and helping both the parents and the teen
understand how conflicts can be resolved with improved communication, we can see significant improvements in the
family relationship. We see such success carry over into improvement in school and social activities, as well as
in other interpersonal relationships in the teen’s life.
FAMILY THERAPY and COUPLE'S THERAPY
Family
therapy focuses on
changes within a family, and recognizes that family relationships have an impact on the feelings, behavior and
psychological adjustment of every family member. Instead of meeting with one individual, all or most family
members are involved in the therapy process. In blended families, therapy may include stepparents, step-siblings
and half-siblings.In Family Therapy, a change in one person creates a change
in the entire family system and the goal of therapy is to help elicit change by looking at the ways thoughts and
feelings interact to form behaviors. Problem resolution comes from gaining a better understanding of each other,
dissolving old patterns, learning new ways to handle emotions, situations and interactions, and learning
different problem-solving skills.
Couple's therapy
focuses on the problems existing in the relationship between two people. In couple’s therapy, we help you and your
partner identify the conflict issues within your relationship. We will assist you in deciding what changes are
needed in the relationship and in the behavior of each partner, in order for both of you to feel satisfied with the
relationship. Couples therapy involves learning how to communicate more effectively, and how to listen more
closely. Couples may wish to explore different ways to interact within the relationship, find greater
intimacy, identify common life goals, or learn how to better share responsibilities. Sometimes couples may need to
explore how individual changes related to one individual’s personal psychological problems impact the
relationship.
Successful treatment in Family Therapy or Couple’s Therapy involves conflict resolution and improved communication.
Like other therapies at Focus Psychotherapy, treatment is usually short-term and problem focused. Improving
relationships has lasting effects as it positively influences other areas of each person’s life.
GROUP THERAPY
Group
therapy benefits people in ways that can’t always be addressed in individual psychotherapy. Groups offer a safe,
confidential environment with the support of others who can share their struggles, and sometimes more
importantly, their successes. Additionally, group therapy allows you to learn from the experiences of others
with similar problems, and also allows you to better understand how different people view the world and interact
with others. Group Therapy has an added advantage of being cost-saving. Most groups meet weekly for an hour and
a half and are ongoing.
